Hayleyhom started a live video.

Many of us millennials were well aware when Instagram released a new feature on their app called Instagram Live toward the end of 2016. This added feature allows people to live stream video of themselves that their followers can watch and comment on. I believe the success of this feature is due to the fact that Instagram has now made everyone who uses the app a famous person.
Before live stories, a lot of internet famous people used an app called YouNow to live stream. These included YouTube stars like Dan Howell and Connor Franta to vine stars like Matthew Espinosa. By allowing normal people to also have the option to perform this action that was formerly dominated by those who are famous, Instagram is essentially making you a cool, famous person.

Also, the way the feature works just adds to this famous feeling. When someone starts a live video, all of their followers get a notification about it. Instagram advertises your name to people as if you were someone of importance.
Instagram's new feature just goes to show that people of this generation need to be told they are special. Instagram as a company gave people a way to feel like they matter, and it worked beautifully. The brand's assumptions that we all just want attention is extremely accurate and true. The application started off as a way for you to tell others to pay attention to what you were doing through posts of photos. The company has just taken the success they had with the original idea and running with it. The live feature is just another way to tell other people to look at you and I have no doubt that Instagram will continue to forge new ways to achieve this same goal.

  1. There are so many YouTubers right now who are famous off of vlogs or are famous and have now started to make vlogs. While this might seem a little of the subject of Instagram Live, they both share an important similarity. They both offer an audience to your everyday life. On these YouTube vlogs, people just share what they're doing in everyday life, and they try to make that content interesting. On Instagram Live, people are usually doing the same thing. I think it's a way of expression and showing what we're doing to the world, but also a way of, like you said, being told we're special. That we matter because others pay attention to us. I definitely see this trend continuing and more social media offering features that allow more sharing about our everyday life.
